Doggy & Kitty!
Who knows what qualifies as a first word but Bobby's reliably saying kkkkttty and ggoggy, just kind of interchangeably between the animals. Don't tell Katy, but this morning he actually said, "doggeez" quite clearly while looking at the two dogs who were following us like sharks anticipating their morning meal.
What's more interesting is his blossoming relationship with Penelope, who can be a touchy cat prone to turning around and biting the hand that pets her. Strangely, although Bobby is still prone to flapping his arms menacingly when he's excited, he's stunningly gentle with her. He does still get excited and flap his arms, but he always steps back first when he's facing the cat. I don't think she's had to teach him about claws yet, but really it takes real control to recognize that he's too excited for the cat, and to step back - a good sign for impulse control in the coming years. He can actually cup her head in his hands - it's a level of dexterity that he shows nowhere else - including and especially with Mommy who's suffering from the results of hurled toys and flailing arms.
His relationship with the DVD is not going so smoothly. He's discovered that a certain button makes the tray slide out. The student scientist in him likes to experiment, sadly the child in him is startled and frightened every time it happens. What's a parent to do but encourage the scientist and soothe the child?
Of course he loves the doggies too, they play a very tame game of chase with him, which is more than adorable. You can tell they can't wait for him to get a little bigger and faster. Bobby shows none of the impulse control that he does with the cat. He grabs their tails, and eyes, and lips, and the dogs just eat it up, all attention is good. The dogs do this thing where they lie on their backs and wrestle the air - kicking wildly at some imaginary dog that's smothering them. One of these days Bobby's going to walk into a thrusting paw and get launched across the room - it'll be a good lesson when it happens. This morning he received a glancing blow from Homer and managed to stay on his feet. Both Homer and Bobby seemed to recognize the close call; what remains to be seen is whether this one brush with wingless flight will change any behavior on either side.
